In the best tradition of intertextual referencing, White recounts how Captain John Biddel, who rescued him, kidnaps some of Gulliver's famous Lilliputians.
The little people escape and seek refuge on an island called Mistress Masham's Repose in the great estate of Maplaquet in Northamptonshire, where they are discovered and befriended by a child. Unfortunately it soon becomes evident that, despite her best efforts, her cruel governess, Miss Brown, and the unscrupulous Vicar, may discover the escapees and use them for their own selfish gain.
Maria must also struggle with her own tendency to 'play' with the Lilliputians and recognise their right to live freely, protected from those who would entrap them. This is a wonderfully crafted narrative, full of drama and imagination.
