Owl took up staring at an early age. Well, he's an Owl. It's what they do. But as Owl soon finds out, not everybody appreciates his staring skills. And it does make getting a job and making friends rather difficult.

It's only when someone finally recognizes Owl's unique talent that he finds contentment – something he's keen to share with others.

This delightful, whimsical, allegorical tale can be read on several levels and gifted children will particularly appreciate Owl's sense of isolation. The Staring Owl explores the distress felt by those who don't quite fit in, for whatever reason. It also conveys the intensity of the joy felt when those who are different find a way to feel content with who they are, a use for their skills, and like minds with whom to share those things. The mostly black and white illustrations, with their heavy lines and rough texture capture and project Owl's intense emotions well beyond the text, engaging reader sympathy.

Highly recommended.
