Gifted with Learning Disability (GLD)

The GLD Support Group provides a regular forum where parents, teachers, counsellors, and others concerned about GLD children can obtain information, support, and advice on assisting, motivating, and advocating for GLD children.

Children of high intelligence who also have one or more developmental differences are described as gifted with learning disablities (GLD).

GLD children may be gifted in understanding and identifying complex relationships, vocabulary, abstract reasoning ability (including mathematical reasoning), creativity, knowledge of information related to a wide variety of topics, and observational skills. At the same time, the mechanics involved in writing, reading, basic computation and completing academic tasks, particularly timed tests, often present great difficulties. GLD children frequently have poor time management and organisational abilities, and/or inconsistent attention issues.

Group members represent a very wide continuum, from those who have documented “proof” that their child is gifted and/or has a learning disablility, to those who simply have a “feeling” that all is not right with their child’s school performance.

Hi Mary,

Yes, meetings are open to new members. The group is just waiting for confirmation that they will be able to use the venue on the chosen dates. Once that happens, the 2008 meeting dates will be published on the website so please keep checking.

regards

What topics have you discussed? We are planning support group meetings for our area, and I was wondering if you have any suggestions for topics.

I recently attended your GLD workshop in Sydney and got a lot out of it - thank you for presenting. I was wanting to as whether you are familiar with the Fast ForWord program and if so, your comments on experience, usage, etc. I have a GLD 8 yr old girl who has APD and wanted to get comments from those who have used it on success, etc. Grateful for any advice!

Glad you found my workshop useful - and sorry for the long delay in replying to your coment. Understand why you're asking about Fast ForWord - but GLD Group has a policy of neither recommending nor criticising professionals or therapies on the website or on the GLD electronic forum. I'll answer in a minute directly to your email address.

No Gordana, nothing special. The next meeting is Thursday 16 February at 7:30pm. New members are always most welcome at these meetings, and you need not already be a member of NSWAGTC to attend. If you can't travel to North Ryde where we hold our meetings, you could join our GLD electronic forum and ask questions. The GLD electronic forum is available only if you are a financial member of NSWAGTC. You can join on this website. Once you have a membership number, all you need do is send me a copy of your membership receipt, and I will have you added to the GLD forum. It may take a few days, as the office is staffed by volunteers. As a GLD forum member, you can either read others’ messages or post your own messages (or both!).

Did you know?
