Sydney - Hornsby

The Hornsby Gifted And Talented Support Group (HOGATSG) is a social support group for families with Gifted Children aged 0 to 14 years living in the Hornsby and surrounding areas - all welcome! The benefits of meeting up with other families with Gifted Children are numerous - your children get to socialise with "like minds" and, as parents you are able to share and learn from each others' experiences.

The group is looking for a voluntary support group co-ordinator.

There could be one or two people responsible for co-ordinating the group, or families could take it in turns to run a day each. Co-ordination simply involves choosing a date, venue & activities and then posting it on this website!! Oh, and turning up to activities with a South West Gifted and Talented Support Group Sign! The benefit for you is that you can choose the day(s) to fit in with you.

If you are interested or want more information please phone the NSWAGTC Resource Office on 9633 5399 or email the  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Hi I live in Thornleigh and I can't seem to find any schools that cater to my 7 year old - can you help?

He's just been tested (WPPSI-III) and we have just received the report, and would like to know of any public schools that offer enrichment education.

The DET say all do, but not all have trained teachers or the program implemented. It's in the too hard basket for our sons current school

Cheers Natalie

Hi Natalie,

good to see your comment, though I am not sure how many will see it here.

I think the two events above are being organised from the NSWAGTC office and there is not yet a Hornsby support group coordinator yet who is monitoring comments on this page.

I am not in your immediate area so my comments are unfortunately not from direct knowledge of your area's schools. Moreover my children are now over 20 so I am a number of years away from your direct situation. But I do remember the steep learning curve we were on when we first had the gifted diagnosis with a 5 year old that was starting to act out at school!

While the gifted label certainly helped us find the information and resources we needed, and joining the NSWAGTC allowed us to help our children mix with others with similar interests, sometimes the gifted label can be a communication problem, and sometimes unfortunately this can be (though shouldn't be) the case with schools or some teachers/administrators.

It may be useful to be prepared to talk at a more specific level about the particular support your child needs. In our case this was a combination of open ended learning options and some understanding recovery in areas where the acting out/learning resistance had occurred. Teachers/administrators are generally comfortable and certainly experienced in talking about specific issues.

There are some good articles on Choosing a School on this website with lots of things to consider - I think they are in the members only For Parents area. You might also find a better response to your questions on the Forum which is designed for interactive discussion.

Good luck - David

NSWAGTC Support Groups

THE NSWAGTC has a number of support groups across NSW and the ACT. The support groups may organise activities for gifted children and/or run a program for parents and teachers depending on the perceived needs of the geographical area or special interest need. Support groups can be a useful first point of contact for those new to the demands of giftedness.

We also have a number of support contacts (members who have volunteered to share their knowledge and experience with other parents or teachers of gifted children) in areas across NSW. Contact the NSWAGTC office for details of your closest support contact, or if you are interested in finding out about establishing a group in your area. Most groups are organised by ordinary parents with an interest in "doing something" to meet the needs of their children and the Association can provide assistance in getting things started.
