Peter Merrotsy and TalentEd

Gifted News

EducationNews.org published on 5 Feb 2008 "An Interview with Peter Merrotsy: About TalentEd in Australia", written by Senior Columnist, Michael F. Shaughnessy. Dr. Shaughnessy is currently Professor in Educational Studies and is a Consulting Editor for Gifted Education International and Educational Psychology Review. Peter describes his current research as follows:

"My research focuses on gifted children and youth from backgrounds of disadvantage (low socio-economic status, cultural minority status, rural and isolated backgrounds). For example, in 2007 I completed two research projects, which identified 'invisible underachievers' (children with high learning potential who are not perceived to be gifted and who are underachieving in the school system), and set in place community based programmes to help the children achieve their potential at school. I have published papers on gifted education in rural contexts, gifted Aboriginal children, academic acceleration, giftedness and psychopathology, diversity and educational environments, mathematics and problem solving, and portfolio of artefacts for qualitative research. I am currently working on a qualitative model of dynamic assessment that is showing promise in assessing cognitive ability amongst refugee children and Aboriginal children from isolated communities. I have been involved in three Australian government funded projects taking workshops about gifted children to parents in isolated communities and to teachers in low SES areas all around Australia."
