Welcome to Outside the Square Oct 11

Denise_Wood_photoThinking about our future is something that we all do at various times – what will I be doing in 10 years’ time? How will I be using my skills and abilities? Will I be able to make a difference in the world? What types of career will be available into the future?

Do you think about your future? What you will need to learn, how people will earn their living, how leisure and play will change. Many years ago, there were predictions that computers would take over and there would be no need for people to work machines, to do manual labour, to manage small tasks. Some worried about the loss of interactions, of flexibility, of spontaneity.

Some of the predictions have come true but others have not – one of the most noticeable being that there was a thought that teachers would not be needed any more – all children would learn from computers and not need to be in school. For some of you not having to go to school would be wonderful, but for others it would be lonely and too quiet. We are all different in our need for stimulation from other people and in the way we learn and respond to information.

In this October 2011 issue of Outside the Square we will look at some careers and wonder – what will become of them? But also, how do you go about getting into them and what the job actually involves. Sometimes there is much more to a career than we know! See our Odd Jobs item!

I have also pulled together some ideas for art experiments – trying new ways to produce images and designs. Thinking about drawing and how we can represent our world with different media. See our Newspaper World Clouds and Sock It to Them items.

I hope that you all find something in here to entertain you, to cause you to wonder and to challenge your thinking. Perhaps you can produce and send in something to share – or to report on.

Enjoy this issue!
