Moving to a new server
Saturday, 03 April 2010 07:54
The NSWAGTC website will be moved from its current server to its new server on Tuesday 6 April. For most people this is expected to pass without any noticeable effect. Read below for the exceptions and the expected timing:
1. Those people who use the existing member borrowing library search and loan request application will find that this has been replaced by a new book library application that will offer up-to-date data about the member library holdings and some book library functionality. This is a new application for the association and for the office staff so there may be some teething problems. On the other hand it immediately replaces a database that is significantly out of date.
2. From 7am on Monday 5 April the current mirror or test site will be frozen for new content/testing - this is to allow us to backup the new library application that has been developed on that site for transfer to the new site.
3. At 11pm on Monday 5 April the current live site will be frozen for new content - this is to allow it to be backed up ready for transfer to the new site. Anything added after that time will be lost. I will also move the existing test site files to another folder on the same server.
4. On the morning of Tuesday 6 April we will rebuild the existing site on the new server..
5. On the afternoon of Tuesday 6 April we will rebuild the new library application on the new server.
6. By the evening of Tuesday 6 April the new site should be ready for quick testing.
7. Assuming the testing is fine, I will then arrange for the domain name nswagtc.org.au to point to the new server rather than the old one - this process is normally quick but can take up to 24-48 hours.
8. I will keep the old server files in place for a month before it is deleted. This will also get rid of a number of legacy files from the transition/hybrid site days, which have from time to time still been visible via search engines - and led to some confusion to site users.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this process.

Gifted children vary a lot. Some are great at sports. Some have disabilities. Children can be gifted or not along one or more of a large number of dimensions. Labels like "gifted" need to be used carefully as all children are different. |
NSWAGTC Blogs
The blogs appearing on the NSWAGTC site are designed to provide colour, news and subjective views about the many issues and concerns facing gifted children and their parents, care-givers and educators. Some of the blogs are associated with formal roles of the NSWAGTC, such as the President and the Webmaster. These allow the persons filling these roles to note to members any current news and changes. Other NSWAGTC blogs are written by individuals with experience of gifted children from one or more perspectives - for example Cate's Blog is from the viewpoint of a primary school teacher and parent of gifted children. These blogs are written solely by the person identified and represent his or her views, rather than necessarily those of the NSWAGTC. Comments are invited We invite comments on our blog entries, by both financial members and registered users (free). Click here to register. Comments may be reviewed and those considered inappropriate will be deleted. New blogs? We would also be delighted to consider applications from potential bloggers provided that the applicant accepts that this will be subject to a review process and may well be declined for any number of reasons which may not be shared with the applicant. Applications, which should include a resume and a vision for the potential blog, and suggestions for new blogs, can be sent in the first instance to the webmaster. |
