Magic Discipline?

Ahhh, back to school - early mornings, busy, busy, busy, trying to adjust - and that's just the teachers! I love to go back with positive changes and new ideas, which is the best part of the holidays for me - time to relax, recharge and research.
Now, Year Six can be a little - how shall I put this - feisty? in Term 4. So I researched soem positive classroom management strategies and have found one that seems to be working very well. Known as "1-2-3-Magic" it uses explicit, systematic warnings and consistency of consequences. It really is "discipline 101", but as parents and teachers, we can get caught up in the moment and forget these basics sometimes. I love that I can quietly make eye-contact and say "that's two", for example, and the child knows that consequences WILL happen on the '3'. As I've explained the consequences clearly, I'm seeing students actively pulling back to calm behaviour to avoid them.

It would be even easier to use at home, as I have to keep track of several children's warnings at once. According to the literature, it works well with ADHD children as well. Check it out - I'd be interested to know what you think.

NSWAGTC Blogs

The blogs appearing on the NSWAGTC site are designed to provide colour, news and subjective views about the many issues and concerns facing gifted children and their parents, care-givers and educators.

Some of the blogs are associated with formal roles of the NSWAGTC, such as the President and the Webmaster. These allow the persons filling these roles to note to members any current news and changes.

Other NSWAGTC blogs are written by individuals with experience of gifted children from one or more perspectives - for example Cate's Blog is from the viewpoint of a primary school teacher and parent of gifted children. These blogs are written solely by the person identified and represent his or her views, rather than necessarily those of the NSWAGTC.
