Experiments for little ones....

I've been tugging my mind to think of fun things I could do with Sam .....and then I remembered seeing the NSWAGTC website advertising the science experiment workshops. That inspired me: why don't I create some fun experiments for us to do?

So every couple of days, Scientist Sam (sometimes Engineering Sam) and mum have been doing fun experiments, and I'm so pleased Sam loves them.

Experiment 1:

What happens when you put ice in the sun?

We took some ice blocks from the fridge and left them in a teacup in the sun for a couple of hours, and Sam was shocked and entertained to see "they break!" (melt).

Experiment 2:

How do we get night and day?

We got an inflatable earth planet and Sam stuck a picture of him on Australia. Then we turned off the lights in his room. I turned on the torch sun and Sam turned the earth planet around and around... and sometimes his picture was in the light and sometimes in the dark! Sam was delighted to learn that the earth turns and that's how we get night and day.

Experiment 3:

What happens when you make water go very, very cold?

Sam filled a bowl with water and then put in the freezer. He put his finger in and played with the water. When he went to get his water after many hours, he was almost horrified that it went hard! He couldn't stick his finger in.

Experiment 4:

What happens when you put chocolate in the sun?

It melts! (OK, I admit, maybe this one was just an excuse to justify buying some chocolate - we used a piece and I enjoyed the rest..........)

I love that Sam looks forward to our experiments. We only do one every few days as its taking his mum some brain tugging to keep coming up with ones that are simple and fun (more reason to attend one of the NSWAGTC's workshops). My challenge is now to come up with another 4 experiments! I'd love to hear of more ideas......maybe we'll plant some seeds next.

NSWAGTC Blogs

The blogs appearing on the NSWAGTC site are designed to provide colour, news and subjective views about the many issues and concerns facing gifted children and their parents, care-givers and educators.

Some of the blogs are associated with formal roles of the NSWAGTC, such as the President and the Webmaster. These allow the persons filling these roles to note to members any current news and changes.

Other NSWAGTC blogs are written by individuals with experience of gifted children from one or more perspectives - for example Cate's Blog is from the viewpoint of a primary school teacher and parent of gifted children. These blogs are written solely by the person identified and represent his or her views, rather than necessarily those of the NSWAGTC.

Comments are invited

We invite comments on our blog entries, by both financial members and registered users (free). Click here to register. Comments may be reviewed and those considered inappropriate will be deleted.

New blogs?

We would also be delighted to consider applications from potential bloggers provided that the applicant accepts that this will be subject to a review process and may well be declined for any number of reasons which may not be shared with the applicant. Applications, which should include a resume and a vision for the potential blog, and suggestions for new blogs, can be sent in the first instance to the webmaster.
