Colour Games......

Sam loves numbers and maths and he seems to see things very differently. In Sam's world, everything can be a beautiful number - even colours.Like today after sport. After telling him he could have a snake, but only one, he asked the lady at the shop for blue and yellow. Then we had a rolling debate where I said "only one!" and he said "blue and yellow!"
It was only after I stopped arguing with him that I could pause and reflect. "You mean you want a green snake?" "Yes!" he beamed. I put myself in his shoes and thought about how Sam sees the world. And soooo.... blue + yellow = green. He was only asking for one snake.
There are other times his use of numbers will throw us. Driving home, Sam would say "I don't want to go home! I don't want to go home!" When we asked him where he would like to go, he would answer "316!" and when we asked him where that was he just kept repeating his explanation that we should be driving to 316....
So after weeks I've finally figured it. Sam loves reading the Gregory's Street directory and it is currently one of his favourite books. I was looking over his shoulder and he said "Mummy drive to 316!" Map 316 is where the airport is!
Sam loves the airport because there are flight numbers and gate numbers everywhere and he loves having so many numbers to read. And he knows going to the airport means he gets a nice plane trip to visit his grandparents. Sooo... he was just saying he'd like to go to the airport.
Sometimes Sam says very logical things that we don't understand.... and we may inadvertently criticize him for being right. Sam often surprises us. We're trying to think about things more when he uses expressions that, on the surface, seem ‘odd'.
Just in...

NSWAGTC Blogs
The blogs appearing on the NSWAGTC site are designed to provide colour, news and subjective views about the many issues and concerns facing gifted children and their parents, care-givers and educators. Some of the blogs are associated with formal roles of the NSWAGTC, such as the President and the Webmaster. These allow the persons filling these roles to note to members any current news and changes. Other NSWAGTC blogs are written by individuals with experience of gifted children from one or more perspectives - for example Cate's Blog is from the viewpoint of a primary school teacher and parent of gifted children. These blogs are written solely by the person identified and represent his or her views, rather than necessarily those of the NSWAGTC. Comments are invited We invite comments on our blog entries, by both financial members and registered users (free). Click here to register. Comments may be reviewed and those considered inappropriate will be deleted. New blogs? We would also be delighted to consider applications from potential bloggers provided that the applicant accepts that this will be subject to a review process and may well be declined for any number of reasons which may not be shared with the applicant. Applications, which should include a resume and a vision for the potential blog, and suggestions for new blogs, can be sent in the first instance to the webmaster. |
