Number Games and Counting Letterboxes

Sam loves houses because they all have numbers and the numbers go in sequences of two, even up one side, and odd down the other. When he was younger, we would run along and he would guess what the next house number would be. A very good house would have the number clearly displayed on the letterbox, another number near the door, and sometimes even on the gate. Sam would get so excited at these houses. He would jump up and down in glee and yell the numbers at the top of his voice.
Bad houses made him sad. They were the ones without numbers. "What happened to the number, mummy, what happened to the number?' he'd lament. I wished I could go around and tell all those house owners to put their numbers up
So today he surprised me because he said "there's the 7 times 7 house mummy." I was a bit puzzled. I looked over and we were at number 49. Sam's been playing with multiplication and today was the first time I saw him apply it to anything. Then he pointed out the 8 times 11 house (number 88!) across the road.
The next house was number 47, which initially threw both of us. He asked me what times 47 was, and I couldn't think of the answer. Then it hit me. Off course, every number is divisible by itself and one! So then off we went. Number 47 was the 1 times 47 house, and number 45 was 5 times 9 house........
Tomorrow, we are going to find a new suburb to count letterboxes in. I think I'll take him somewhere near the beach. That should be fun.

NSWAGTC Blogs
The blogs appearing on the NSWAGTC site are designed to provide colour, news and subjective views about the many issues and concerns facing gifted children and their parents, care-givers and educators. Some of the blogs are associated with formal roles of the NSWAGTC, such as the President and the Webmaster. These allow the persons filling these roles to note to members any current news and changes. Other NSWAGTC blogs are written by individuals with experience of gifted children from one or more perspectives - for example Cate's Blog is from the viewpoint of a primary school teacher and parent of gifted children. These blogs are written solely by the person identified and represent his or her views, rather than necessarily those of the NSWAGTC. Comments are invited We invite comments on our blog entries, by both financial members and registered users (free). Click here to register. Comments may be reviewed and those considered inappropriate will be deleted. New blogs? We would also be delighted to consider applications from potential bloggers provided that the applicant accepts that this will be subject to a review process and may well be declined for any number of reasons which may not be shared with the applicant. Applications, which should include a resume and a vision for the potential blog, and suggestions for new blogs, can be sent in the first instance to the webmaster. |
