Gifted and Learning Disabled (GLD) support groupA group supporting gifted children who have specific learning disabilities operating under the auspices of NSWAGTC Children of high intelligence who also have one or more learning disabilities are described as gifted and learning disabled (GLD). GLD children may be gifted in understanding and identifying complex relationships, vocabulary, abstract reasoning ability (including mathematical reasoning), creativity, knowledge of information related to a wide variety of topics, and observational skills. At the same time, the mechanics involved in writing, reading, basic computation and completing academic tasks, particularly timed tests, often present great difficulties. GLD children frequently have poor time management, organisational abilities, and/or executive functioning skills. Since 1995, the group has been providing a regular forum where parents, teachers, counsellors and others concerned about GLD children can get information, support and advice on parenting and motivating GLD children. Participants represent a very wide continuum, from those who have documented “proof” that their child is gifted and/or learning disabled, to those who simply have a “feeling” that all is not right with their child’s school performance. GLD Support Group Meetings Meetings are held twice each school term on a Thursday evening starting around 7.30 pm. Participants are free to arrive at any time during the evening and new members are always welcome. Generally there is a guest speaker and all meetings provide an opportunity for discussion, swapping information and, most importantly, meeting other families in a similar situation. Note: New Meeting Venue Meetings are held at the Macquarie Community Centre which is located at Macquarie Shopping Centre, Herring Road, Ryde. Go to the roof top parking level (called the "Loft") and follow signs to the Medical Centre or Greater Union Cinemas. To find the meeting room - look for the double glass doors signed "Community Centre" which are located next door to the Medical Centre. Parking is free. Meeting Dates for 2007
